Why does my hair turn red whatever colour I dye it?!?

Hi, I must admit that I'm going pretty grey, so I've been colouring my hair for a while. I tend to find that whatever colour I choose, be it black, natural brown, etc etc, it follows this pattern:

1) initially goes to the described shade

2) turns jet black over the next 24 hours

3) fades to sandy reddy grey mess in a month or so

My natural colour ( apart from the grey ) is mid to dark brown, but there are definite red undertones in there too, especially when I've been in the sun, when the ends can go almost blonde.

maybe because you are using a cheap box dye. go to the salon and get it done, it is more expensive but that wont happen anymore

All hair color is a version of red (concentration of melanin). So is the pigments in the hair coloring agents.

you have alot iron in your system. happens to me also

It is because you are using an home dye, its best to got to a salon, as they use a range of colouring products to counteract the red tone so you don't have that problem. But have you ever thought of going to the local training salons in a college, i know that sounds scary, they have the same products and its cheap There are a few qualified hairdressers who are doing refresher courses or higher training available, but lets face it everyone has to start from somewhere, like i said it is very cheap. In the end what ever you choose to do you will be very surprised on how good your hair looks and feels
