black is really hard to get out of the hair. Hair color is really wierd. . . obviously virgin hair is the easiest to work with. There is a newer product on the market that will pull the black out of your hair-- you can get it from Sally Beauty Supply.. . I know of two Loreal's Color Zap and Colorfix. I reccommend Color fix, I have seen the results from it.

If you put a color on top of black nothing will happen because when you color your hair, the new color forms a barrier on top of the new color to prevent fading. Another haircolor cannot break this barrier when trying to go lighter. So until recently you has to bleach the hair to get it lighter than recolor. The problem with bleaching is that it removes your natural pigment as well as the color, damaging the hair.

The good thing about this colorfix is . . . it breaks the barrier of the color without affecting your natural pigment. . . It doesn't damage the hair, at all! Now if you have never lightened your natural hair color.. . colorfix will return your hair to natural. However if you have ever lightened your hair, you probably will have a funky orange color on your hair.

Either way. . . you can immediately put a new color on your hair. Depending on the darkness of your hair, you will need to decide what to do.

Loreal Hi color has the ability to lift 5 shades out of the hair befor depositing the new color. . . I'd try this because the red that you want is an intense red.

I hope this helps

always best to go to a pro but if you do it at home

get a good light rinser and measure the time correctly on each strand
